JOHOR BARU: Ambulance driver Mohd Fariz Anuar put his life on the line when he went to the aid of about 30 schoolchildren affected by toxic gas from Sungai Kim Kim.
The 44-year-old ended up in Sultan Ismail Hospital’s intensive
care unit last Thursday, where he lay unconscious for two days, with his wife,
Hanisah Alias, 45, waiting patiently by his side.
When he woke up on Saturday, it was the students that were on his mind.
“The first few words that came out from him were to ask if those
children were safe. He also asked about our children.
“I told him that he did a wonderful job rescuing all those
children and asked him to rest,” said Hanisah, when met by reporters yesterday.
She is grateful that her husband’s condition has improved,
although he still depends on a breathing apparatus.
Hanisah said Fariz, who has been an ambulance driver for the
past 10 years, had always been dedicated to his work and took pride in helping
those in need.
“When I called him on the day of the incident, he told me he
needed to go to the school as the children there were sick.
“I told him to take care of himself.
“My husband assured me that everything would be all right and
told me he would call me in the afternoon.
“But he never did,” she recalled, adding that she was informed
by the hospital that Fariz was in a coma.
She added that the doctors had put Fariz under observation but
she was hopeful that he would be discharged soon.
It was reported that chemical waste dumped in Sungai Kim Kim on
March 7 caused many victims, including students, to seek medical treatment due
to the toxic fumes.
