A Very Special Forest in a Campus
|
|
Do you know that Universiti Teknologi MARA (Perak) campus
at Seri Iskandar is home to some extremely rare and highly threatened
dipterocarp species? Dipterocarp species are species of trees that provide
valuable timber and these have for many decades been in the mainstream of the
timber industry. A handful of species are extremely rare and because of
land-use change pressures, these have become severely threatened. Universiti
Teknologi MARA (Perak) campus has five such species–Dipterocarpus
semivestitus (keruing padi), Hopea apiculata (resak melukut), Shorea
hemsleyana (cengal pasir daun besar), Shorea macrantha (kepong hantu) and
Vatica flavida (resak padi).
