Kes Diphtheria

Another new diphtheria case has been reported in Perak involving a four-year-old girl, said Health director-general Datuk Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah.
He said the Perak Health Department confirmed the case two days ago after the child received treatment at the Taiping Hospital on August 17 due to fever, cough and sore throat since August 12.
“The child only suffered mild symptoms without complications because she already has full diphtheria immunisation. She is only treated with antibiotics and is gradually recovering,” he said in a statement here today.
He said so far seven members of the family living in the same house as the child are in good health and had received prophylaxis treatment.
Noor Hisham said to date 28 diphtheria cases, including five deaths were reported in Malaysia.
Out of the total cases, nine cases were reported in Kedah with one death, seven cases in Negri Sembilan, five cases in Sabah with three deaths, three in Malacca with one death, two cases in Penang and one each in Selangor and Perak, he said.
“The ministry would like to stress that a full immunisation can prevent infection and, if infected, the symptoms are mild and there are no complications,” he said.
