PETALING JAYA: Days before he was confirmed as a carrier of
Covid-19, Hamdan Hashmuddin began to have trouble breathing.
Hamdan said it started with a fever, followed by a dry cough and
shortness of breath.
At that time, the 31-year-old said he was still waiting for the
test results and unsure of his status.
“I decided to go for a test after my parents were found to be
positive for Covid-19.
“My father was in close contact with a Covid-19 patient at a
government-linked company meet in late February, ” he said in a video interview
to share his experience and to urge the public to adhere to the movement
control order (MCO).
Hamdan said after his parents were found to be positive, the
agony for his family started.
“The symptoms of the virus slowly emerged. At that time, I
preferred to be asleep rather than awake because of the high fever.
“When I got to know that I was positive, I was already in
extreme pain and struggling to breathe, ” he added.
The drive to Hospital Tuanku Ja’afar in Seremban from his house
in Nilai was a harrowing experience. “I
was in deep pain inside the ambulance, which was travelling during rush
hour.

in Nilai was a harrowing experience. “I was in deep pain inside the ambulance,
which was travelling during rush hour.
“I also got car sick during the journey, ” he said, adding that
the doctor accompanying him and the driver were both clad in personal
protective equipment.
Hamdan said unlike him, his parents were asymptomatic throughout
their stay in the hospital.
“I want people to know that by self-isolating, they are not only helping themselves but others as
well.“This is a serious illness. For those who are asymptomatic, they would
not know about their status unless they are tested, ” he said, adding that
people should be aware that they could pass the virus to others despite having
no symptoms.
When asked how he felt during his stay in the hospital, Hamdan
said he was afraid and lonely.
“At one point, I thought
I was going to die. I was in an isolation ward. My parents were next door
but they weren’t able to see me, ” Hamdan added.
Now, he said he felt positive after having weathered the storm.
“I am no longer in pain but just having a slight cough. The feeling of being able to breathe
normally is great. I couldn’t do that at all just last week, ” he said.
